Region Builders 2018 Recap

Key Policy Victories:

  • Rent Control Blocked – Region Builders led the charge and successfully blocked multiple rent control proposals in Sacramento City. These proposals would have subjected new development to rent control (which would have dried up apartment and mixed-use development). Additionally, we successfully blocked multiple efforts by suburban cities in our region to evaluate similar rent control proposals.

  • Affordable Housing Fees Eliminated – Region Builders passed the most significant fee reform in the history of our region by getting the City of Sacramento to eliminate impact fees on affordable housing development. This idea was first brought up in a Region Builders meeting in January and it successfully passed it through the City Council in October. We are now using this policy as a template and believe that we can get several more jurisdictions in 2019 to adopt the policy.

  • Building Permit Process Streamlined – Region Builders expanded our Permit Simplicity policy with the City of Elk Grove to include all tenant improvements and some new construction. There is no program in the State of California that provides such wide sweeping streamlining reform. Recently, the Mi Rancho food processing facility expanded to Elk Grove. They got their permit for a 150,000 square foot tenant improvement in one day!

  • Wilton Rancheria Approved – Region Builders spearheaded a local campaign to support the development of the Wilton Rancheria Casino & Resort in Elk Grove. We organized a large turnout in support of the State Compact for the Casino project which was approved this year.

Key Campaign Victories:

Region Builders successfully ran and supported major campaign to bring new faces to City Council’s in our region. No one on this list has ever been elected prior to 2018.  The goal was to identify potential candidates, recruit them to run, and ensure their victory. We succeeded.

  • Mike Kozlowski (Folsom) – Mike is a former member of Region Builders who served on our Government Affairs Committee. We ran Mike’s campaign and were successful.

  • Stephanie Nguyen (Elk Grove) – We got Stephanie appointed to the City Council and then elected in November. We spent tens of thousands on voter mailers to ensure her successful election against a strong opponent.

  • Porsche Middleton (Citrus Heights) – We supported Porsche early for the election and successfully helped her win a seat on the Council.

  • Garrett Gatewood (Rancho Cordova) – We got Garrett appointed to the City Council and then elected in November. Garrett is a former member of our Region Technology Board of Directors.
